Production and release[]

Yellowjackets was renewed for a third season on December 15, 2022, ahead of the release of the second season of the program.[4] With the second season having aired March 2023, it was originally anticipated that the third season would most likely premiere sometime in 2024. However, filming on the season was delayed due to the strikes of both the WGA and SAG in 2023.[5]
Showrunners Bart Nickerson and Jonathan Lisco will be directing episodes of the series for the first time, Nickerson directing 301 and Lisco directing 303.[5] Both Joel McHale and Hilary Swank have been announced as guest stars for third season.[6]
Vanity Fair released a first look for the new season on October 31, 2024, which confirmed that it is currently planned to release in "early 2025." The show's creators promised that the new season would resolve many outstanding mysteries, with Ashley Lyle stating that it will "realize much of the vision for the show that she and her cocreator, Bart Nickerson, developed at the very outset" and that there will be at least "two very big questions with very clear answers." The season will see "an overlapping of the past and present," represented in a series of images that show each "teen" character alongside their "adult" self. This early look also confirmed that the "adult" version of Natalie Scatorccio would not be seen following the death of the character in the previous season, hence the haunting shots of the young character without her adult self.[7]
Yellowjackets Season 3 – Coming Soon
Showtime announced the release date of the new season with a 15-second teaser on November 20, 2024. [1]
On November 21, 2024, it was reported that Sarah Desjardins, who portrayed Shauna Sadecki's daughter Callie in the first and second seasons of Yellowjackets in a recurring role, had been upped to the role of a series regular for Season 3.[8] Notably absent from any of the news regarding the new season has been any mention of the reported "bonus episode" between the second and third stories, which it was widely believed would focus on the backstory of the "Hunter," or "Cabin Daddy" character. Some interpreted this as meaning the episode is likely dead in the water and will not be released.[9] However, in an Entertainment Weekly exclusive published on December 2, 2024, Ashley Lyle stated that "The truth is that there is a bonus episode but we may need to wait a bit longer for it."[10]
Entertainment Weekly also revealed two teen characters being played by new actresses, Anisa Harris as "Teen Robin" and Silvana Estifanos as "Teen Britt".[10]
Yellowjackets Season 3 First Look 🔪
On December 7, 2024, a first look video for the new season was released on the official Yellowjackets channel on YouTube. The video includes the tagline "the past will come back to hunt you" and features scenes such as Callie Sadecki asking her mother Shauna what happened in the wilderness, the adult Yellowjackets receiving mysterious letters indicating that someone wants to kill them, and the young Shauna howling in the wilderness. A hallucination of the young Jackie Taylor is glimpsed, as is Walter Tattersall. The video also includes a first look at Hilary Swank's character, sporting a bandaged arm and blood smeared down her face and neck.
Yellowjackets Season 3 - Official Trailer - Paramount+ With SHOWTIME
The full trailer for the third season of the program was released on January 22, 2025.
On January 28, 2025, it was reported that Ashley Sutton is part of the third season in a currently unknown recurring role, appearing in four out of ten episodes.[11]
Sophie Nélisse, who plays Teen Shauna Shipman, spoke about her character in the third season in an interview with Collider. She stated that in Season 2, her character had showcased her grief and underwent so much loss that she kind of isolated herself from the group. In Season 3, she finds herself with nothing else to lose, still in so much pain and thus letting that out on other people. She concluded that "So I think she'll be very unhinged and very scary, very unpredictable, and like I said, nothing to lose. So, she's kind of unstoppable this season."[12]
According to Christina Ricci, the season has a "really high body count."[13]
On Monday, February 10, 2025, Entertainment Weekly released another set of exclusive photos which depicted, among other things, Shauna biting Mari's arm, with the promise of additional exclusives each day of the week.[14]
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the show's creators stated that the death of Natalie Scatorccio would drive season three. They also stated that Juliette Lewis will not appear in the third season, as it did not make sense to them, but that they are open to the possibility of her appearing in some form or another, such as flashbacks, in the future. They also stated that while the season is in some ways campier and more fun, it is ultimately not lighter in tone.[15]
In another exclusive from Entertainment Weekly, it was revealed that following her ordeal at Camp Green Pine, Shauna had a traumatic piece of her past unlocked for her that she had tried to suppress and that now she has opened the door, she can't close it again. Furthermore, she now has to deal with the fact that Callie was a part of what happened at the compound, a situation that is exacerbated when Lottie shows up on her doorstep and Callie is all-too-interested in spending time with her. Ultimately, the character in some ways goes off the rails.[16]
Reception[]
Following the release of the season's sixth episode, "Thanksgiving (Canada)," streaming viewership for the season was reported to be 39% ahead of that of the show's second season.[17] On Rotten Tomatoes, the season, as March 14, 2025, carries an 86% certified fresh rating from critics with the Critics' Consensus that "Still at its very best when lost in the wilderness, Yellowjackets' third season is inescapably uneven but carried along effortlessly by its stronger elements." and a viewer popcorn meter of 58% fresh.[18] While the second season currently carries at 94% fresh rating from critics, its approval among fans is somewhat lower than that of the third season, at only 44%.[19]
The third season finale, "Full Circle," was reported to have the program's highest ratings yet.[20] Despite this, as May 11, 2025, nearly a month following the finale, the program has yet to be renewed for a fourth season. The reasoning for this is unclear, though fans have speculated that Showtime may need to finish contract negotiations with the show's cast and crew before they can commit to a fourth season.
