Mrs. Singh to Misty, "Bear Down"

Misty Quigley is a character on the Showtime original series Yellowjackets. She is portrayed by Sammi Hanratty as a teenager and Christina Ricci as an adult.

Profile[]

Misty was a geeky, eager-to-please outcast who served as the equipment manager for the WHS Yellowjackets team. While technically a part of the team, Misty was never truly accepted or acknowledged as a member. However, during the team's fateful crash, her first aid skills proved invaluable. For the first time, she felt accepted and appreciated, and her desire to keep things that way brought out a terrifying side to her that grew stronger as she aged. As an adult, she has taken a job as a nurse at a nursing home, Sunnyview Senior Home, a position that gives her dominion over decisions of life and death on a daily basis. She is also a member of a community of online "citizen detectives," a group of people self-described by her as investigating crimes even though nobody pays them for it or even asked them to.

Personality[]

Misty is cheery and clever with a strong urge to help (or meddle with) people in order to feel loved and important under the guise of being helpful. She will even go so far as to secretly create a problem for someone, just so that she can be the one to help/fix it. She is also maniacal and incredibly dangerous when slighted to the an almost sociopathic level. During the crash, Misty's first aid skills proved lifesaving, earning her respect and acceptance among the team. However, this situation appeared to reveal a form of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, as Misty would keep people sick, hurt, or weakened to sustain recognition. She sabotaged the plane's emergency transmitter, hoping to be able to live out her dreams by being helpful to the team. She is also quick to pass blame and retaliate when she feels she is not being appreciated or is slighted, such as poisoning Ben when he rejects her.

As an adult, not much seem to have changed for her. She is still oddly cheery in inappropriate situations and obsessive, causing her to be ostracized by most of society at a glace. She seems to have discovered her passion as a nurse, a job in which she is surrounded all day by people who need her help and are at her mercy; she once withheld pain medication from an obstinate patient. Her tendencies to sabotage people so they have to rely on her appears to have become a common occurrence. She seems to be entirely friendless and thus often engineers or inserts herself into situations in order to try to create closer friends.

She also seems to have some internal mental issues even before the crash, making her seem rather stoic when dealing with gore and other troubling things that would disgust most others. She is incredibly socially awkward and has disturbing lack of social awareness in that she fails to grasp how dangerous her actions are, often seeing destructive actions the same as more benign everyday actions; apart from destroying the signal device from the plane simply because she wanted keep her newfound popularity, she told this to her new friend Crystal when they were sharing secrets and was shocked when Crystal was horrified. Even then her first reaction to try and keep Crystal's silence was to simply offer to do all her camp chores as though that could make up for what she had done. She was unphased by Ben's cries of agony from cauterizing his leg, but also more excited at the chance to show people how useful she is and is more or less unfazed at chopping up and disposing of a body. She also seems to have empathy issues, demonstrated by her watching a drowning rat before departing to nationals, making no effort to try to help it as well as failing to understand why people don't like or trust her.

There are hints that Misty's true desire is to be someone like Jackie, the leader who everyone follows and loves but lacks the self-confidence to outright aim for that and thus settles for serving others.

Sabotage[]

Yellowjackets 101 6379 R

Misty with Coach Scott at the practice prior to nationals

As an outcast, she sometimes receives prank phone calls from classmates, who tease her for her seemingly odd behavior. Her life, along with that of the others, takes a turn when the plane carrying them crashes in the wilderness. She has training in first aid, though the other players on the team do not respect her knowledge until it proves useful following the plane crash. When she discovers Ben Scott, the team's assistant coach, pinioned by the plane's wreckage, she calls over the other team members to help move the large piece of the airplane off of him, revealing that his leg is badly mangled and barely hanging on. He passes out from shock, and Misty chops off his leg at the knee. Later, she cauterizes the wound causing him to faint. She goes around applying first aid to her teammates, explaining that she has all of this knowledge because she twice took the Red Cross babysitting course. While crouching out of sight in the woods to pee, she overhears two of her teammates saying that they'd seriously be in trouble without her. Misty is thrilled by this, savoring the feeling of being needed and appreciated. She notices a blinking red light beneath some of the wreckage, which turns out to be the crashed plane's flight recorder. She smashes it repeatedly against some rocks until there is a small gap between the metal pieces, reaches her hand in, and pulls out the wiring.

She revels in her role as Ben's savior and caretaker, insisting that he eat when he doesn't want to. When he struggles with the pain or limitations from his injury, she is right there to help and soothe him, She even props him up while he tries to "go" in the woods, telling him he is late for his "movement" and, despite him repeatedly telling her to stop talking, she goes on about what might help and starts singing to him. When he starts to become more capable and independent, Misty does things like tripping him so he falls and she can come to his aid. She later goes into his room in the cabin to check on him as he sleeps, alarmed by his erection and reaches out to touch it when he wakes up. Ben tells her not to touch him and get out.

Later, annoyed by Ben's continual resistance to her advances, Misty secretly poisons his tea. When, as a means to relieve stress, the girls host a séance at the suggestion of Jackie Taylor, Misty asks the spirits if the object of her affections likes her as well. She gets a positive response, but during the séance, Ben projectile vomits due to the poison. He confronts her about it and she admits doing so and that she has feelings for him. She asks if he feels the same way and he tells her that he does, but that they need to keep it secret due to his being a teacher and her being a minor. She agrees to this, delighted at the idea of having a "secret boyfriend." Later on, however, Ben admits to Natalie that he is gay when she asks him about it, pointing out that he never looks at any of the girls' breasts.

The expedition and the shrooms[]

Yellowjackets 109 0182 R

Misty with a bag of shrooms

A group of girls led by Taissa Turner decide to leave the group in search of help. Misty volunteers after seeing how the rest of the group responds to the girls who are leaving. She approaches Ben hoping for him to ask her to stay, but he instead tells her that it is brave of her to go. During the night, they are attacked by wolves leaving one of the girls, Van, severely injured. Believing she is dead, the girls put her body over the fire. They are shocked when she begins to move and quickly pull her off and put out the flames on her clothing. They try to get her back to the others at the cabin, but eventually leave her and Taissa behind to get help.

Weeks later, the girls are discouraged and feeling defeated. Mari informs them she had made a mixture that included rotten berries intending for it to become alcoholic and they all decide they should have a party in place of the homecoming they did not get to attend, celebrating their impending doom- a "Doomcoming". They dress up in the clothes they'd brought for a banquet and Misty asks Ben to go to the dance with her. He is reluctant, which hurts Misty's feelings. She says she was stupid to think he would want to, and that she knew she wasn't pretty, and he agrees to go with her, reminding her of their boundaries. Misty decides to drug him again with shrooms, but leaves them wrapped in a cloth on the table for a moment and Mari, unaware they are of the psychedelic variety, mixes them in with stew she is making. Misty watches as they all consume the drugged meal, eating her own as well, without saying anything to anyone.

Misty later seeks out Ben, only to hear him talking with Natalie and saying that love is the reason they're all in the woods and that she should go find Travis. While Natalie heads off to find Travis, Misty takes the opportunity to close in. She tells Ben that he should follow his own advice, that love is the reason they're all there. Pushed past endurance, Ben shouts at Misty that he doesn't love her, he loves Paul. When she asks who Paul is, he tells her that he's his boyfriend and that he's gay. Misty is clearly shocked and hurt by the revelation.

Blame game[]

Misty Cannibal

Misty grins in the aftermath of eating a fellow survivor

The next day, many of the girls who were poisoned by the shrooms wake up, dazed and confused by the events of the night before. Coach Scott comments that he has boiled some water, given that the others are probably as hungover as he is. When the girls start arguing over the night before, he comments that he's sure that they all said and did some stuff the night before that they probably regret on the account of the shrooms. This leads the others to realize exactly what was responsible for their behavior the night before and, more importantly, who did it. However, when confronted, Misty says that it was an accident and the shrooms were only meant for Coach Scott. She blames Mari for putting the mushrooms in the soup and Coach Scott further for "tricking her into falling in love with him."

Later, after Lottie Matthews kills a bear, she tries to help with the food preparations, only to be rebuffed as the girls are no longer willing to let her go anywhere near food. Following this, as they prepare to eat the bear meat, Lottie leads the group in prayer at Van's suggestion. When Jackie doesn't join in, Misty is quick to point it out. This results in a massive argument between Jackie and her best friend Shauna, culminating with Jackie going outside the cabin and ultimately freezing to death that night. In the wake of this, Lottie begins a cult and offers up a heart, possibly the bear's, at a frozen altar in the woods. As she chants a dark prayer, Misty and Vanessa stand behind her.

Making a friend?[]

Approximately two months following this, Misty and the others are doing their best to survive the harsh winter that has settled up on the wilderness. Misty still occasionally tries to help with food preparation, but is firmly rebuffed by Mari, who tells her that she knows the rules. To this, she replies that it's not like she's going to try to poison anyone... again. Mari tells her that she drew the four and has to go get the water, to which she whines that she's been doing it every day and it's freezing.

Later, Misty encounters Crystal singing the song "The Glory of Love." Crystal has been annoying everyone with her continuous singing and humming and Misty shouts at her to shut up. Crystal apologizes, saying that she had to go and the singing helps to "grease the skids." She tells Misty that she knows it's annoying to those without a theater background like her and that she wakes up telling herself to stop doing it because she knows its driving everyone bananas, but does it without even realizing it. She tells Misty that she should try it, that it helps. Misty tells her that she can't sing, but she tells her that everyone can sing with a good vocal coach. Misty is dubious of the idea at first, but looks pleased when Crystal suggests that they could harmonize.

Performance and secrets[]

Misty and Crystal soon start singing together on a regular basis, annoying the others. When a baby shower is announced for Shauna, Crystal laments the others rejecting Misty's broth idea. The group has just recently cannibalized Jackie's dead body and Crystal claims to Misty that it's not the first time she's eaten someone. She then clarifies that she absorbed her identical twin in the womb. When Misty wonders what to give Shauna as a baby shower gift, Crystal suggests a performance, which ends up being a monologue about a dead daughter from the film Steel Magnolias. Though disturbed, the others seem to be won over by Misty's passionate performance and Crystal leads an enthusiastic round of applause.

Crystal and Misty begin sharing secrets with each other. One of these is the three famous people they would invite to a slumber party, with one of Misty's being Jack Kevorkian, the suicide doctor. Crystal calls what he does brave, reminiscing over a family beagle that had to be put down and feeling that people shouldn't have to suffer in the same way. When Misty is annoyed to again empty the poop bucket, much to her annoyance, Crystal agrees to come with her.

Standing before the ledge with the poop-bucket, Misty and Crystal play a game of "rapid-fire secrets." After they empty the bucket over the ledge, Misty gets some sticks to scrape the rest and Crystal tells her that she has a secret that she has to pinky-swear not to to the others. Misty does and she reveals that Crystal is not her real name, but rather "Kristen." She explains that people called her Crystal on the first day of practice and she didn't correct them because she enjoyed having a nickname for the first time, "Crystal the Pistol."

Misty is deeply touched by this revelation. She tells Crystal that before the plane crash she didn't think people liked her much, but then they started listening to her. Crystal calls her lucky to have found somebody to share her deepest secrets with. Misty then tells her that she has another secret, saying that she must swear on her mother's life never to tell anyone else. Crystal agrees and Misty reveals to her having found and destroyed the flight's emergency transmitter the night after the crash. Crystal's expression immediately turns horrified. She asks Misty if she's the reason that they never got rescued. Misty grins, saying that she totally got her, but Crystal doesn't believe the lie, telling her that she's not that good an actress. Misty pleads with her not to tell anyone, saying that she'll do anything that she wants. Crystal asks if she'll poison her if she tells and Misty threatens to kill her out of desperation, Crystal backs up and accidentally falls off the edge of the cliff to her death.

Misty stares in shock at her friend's dead body, splayed out below. She races down and applies chest compressions trying to revive her while chanting the song "Stayin' Alive," to keep on beat with her compressions. But Crystal is past the point of saving, blood bubbling from her mouth. Misty tells Crystal that she's sorry, crying, as a snowstorm whips up, covering Crystal's body. She returns to the cabin in the intensifying storm, claiming that she and Crystal got separated in the storm. As it turns out, Shauna and Taissa are also missing, so Misty joins the group in calling out to them, adding in Crystal's name as well to keep up the front.

Misty's guilt[]

Shauna and Taissa miraculously make it back to the cabin through the storm, but Shauna is clearly in labor with the baby that she conceived with Jeff back before the plane crash. The others immediately look to Misty to assist with the birthing, given her knowledge of medicine and the fact that she was the only one to really pay attention to a video about childbirth that Coach Scott played at school. Misty, however, remains beside herself at Crystal's death and runs off to the window after seeing Shauna's blood on her hands, saying that she can't do this. leaving Akilah to oversee things. Lottie, however, comes over to her. She tells her that she had been planning to do this with Crystal, that they were going to do a song. Lottie, however, tells her that Crystal might not be with them, but she can still save Shauna and "their baby." Misty then returns and guides the group through the rest of the birthing process. Though the baby is stillborn, Shauna survives, and the others praise Misty for her levelheadedness, especially at the end.

Following this, however, Misty overhears some of the others discussing the fact that the snow has stopped, yet she isn't outside trying to find Crystal. She therefore gathers the group and says that they need to be out looking for Crystal. The others agree and they form a circle, chanting a mantra started by Lottie - "We hear the wilderness and it hears us." Misty then overhears Melissa and Gen having another conversation in which they say that they hope that they find Crystal alive, but that it might not be the worst thing if they don't, insinuating that they could eat her body and that it would be disrespectful to the wilderness to waste it.

As they go out to search for Crystal, Misty breaks down in a performance of tears, saying that she's worried that they might find Crystal only for her to look just like Jackie, a song frozen in her heart. Akilah tells her that she should probably just go back and she agrees, but once they are out of earshot, she comments to herself that she isn't going to let them eat them. She goes to the spot where Crystal's body fell, but is unable to find it. She does, however, spot Coach Scott on the ledge above. It quickly becomes clear that Coach Scott is attempting to commit suicide. He even asks Misty to push him off the ledge, but she refuses. She tries a series of tactics to keep him from jumping, even going so far as to say that she'll tell the whole world that he's gay, but he just tells her that he doesn't care and to do it. Finally, she breaks down, saying that she tried so hard to keep the baby alive and that she can't have another death on her hands. This works and he finally backs away from the cliff.

Tending Lottie[]

Back at the cabin, Misty hums the song "Lightning Crashes." The song sets off Shauna, who is still beside herself about the loss of her baby, as it references a mother giving birth. She hits Misty in the face, shouting that she killed her baby. The others pull her away, Natalie pointing out the fact that Misty did all she could to try to help. Lottie then offers herself up as an outlet for Shauna's rage and is badly beaten and kicked by her.

Misty and Mari both tend to Lottie, who is in a bad way following Shauna's beating. When Lottie pees blood, Misty says that she could have a kidney infection and Mari complains about the smell of the blood making her eyes water. Growing irritated, Misty shouts at her to shut up, saying that she has to be a whiny brat despite all that Lottie has done for them. She tells her to take the bowl downstairs and empty it if she's so grossed out. As Mari leaves, Misty asks Lottie if she can hear her, but Lottie seems lost in her own mind and visions.

Following this, Misty discovers Ben with a sharp knife. She worries that he might again be trying to commit suicide. He, however, tells her that this isn't the case, explaining that he's modifying his crutches to make them more snow-worthy. She agrees that this is a good idea, that fresh air would be good for him. Later, she is with Lottie in the attic when she hears her moaning and groaning. Lottie tells her that if she dies, she doesn't want them to waste her body. Misty replies that she shouldn't even be thinking about this right now. Lottie, though, insists that she promise, so she does.

A new leader[]

Misty goes to the others, revealing what Lottie had asked of her. Van comments that she can't imagine being there without Lottie. They point out, however, that they may have to imagine this, that Lottie is going to die if they starve, that they all will. Taissa says that they have to find a way to survive and that it can't be Lottie. They are all next seen setting up an altar with a candle and drawing from a deck of cards, Van first holding up a Queen of Hearts with her eyes blacked out. This continues until Natalie draws the Queen. A necklace originally given to Shauna by Jackie is placed around her neck and Shauna places a knife to her throat. Natalie forces Shauna to face her, telling her that she'll have to look her in the eyes, but Travis shouts for her to run. She does, and Misty joins the group that pursues her.

Natalie ends up with Travis's younger brother, Javi, who tries to lead her to a secret place that he discovered where the two of them can hide. The girls pursue them over the frozen lake when the ice starts to crack and Javi falls in. Natalie shouts for the others to come and help her to pull Javi out, but only Misty comes over. She shouts at Natalie to stop and pulls her away from Javi, warning her that the others will get her if she saves Javi. They thus allow Javi to die by drowning, and pull out his dead body, Misty feeling for a pulse and finding nothing. Van declares that the wilderness chose.

The group returns to the cabin with Javi's body, and Travis cries and screams upon the sight. Misty returns to Lottie in the attic, who asks her what this was about. Misty tells her that they're going to eat Javi. She tells her that she told the others what she had said about wanting them to eat her body if they died, but that they need her and so they made up the ritual and the wilderness chose. Lottie says that she didn't want this, asking Misty how she could let them. Misty, however, turns the question on her, saying that she started all of this. She tells her that she started it and that she'd better not start making people feel bad about it now. She then returns downstairs and lies to the others that Lottie had said she was pleased with the wilderness's choice.

After Javi's body is prepared by Shauna, Misty goes to Lottie, insisting that she eat. Reluctantly, Lottie does so. She later goes down to the others, having recovered enough strength to finally walk. She tells them that she never wanted to be in charge, that the wilderness only chose her because she was the only one who knew how to listen. She continues that they all have now, so it doesn't need her anymore, and in fact, has already chosen a new leader, that it chose who fed them. She declares this be Natalie and the group all pays their respects to Natalie in their own ways, Misty giving a theatrical curtsy. That evening, the cabin burns down and Misty escapes with the others.

Setting traps[]

Sometime later during the winter season, Misty is revealed to be part of a group of eight remaining survivors who have deeply ritualized the cannibalism they have resorted to in the woods. They are seen stringing up the nude body of a girl who had fallen into a trap, impaled on spikes, and slitting her throat to drain her of blood. They later dismember, cook, and eat the girl’s body around a campfire before moving on. All of them are dressed up thickly in animal furs, but only Misty is shown removing hers, a smile on her face.

The present[]

The postcard[]

Yellowjackets 102 0222 R

Natalie confronts Misty with the strange postcard

25 years later, she serves as a nurse for the elderly. Among her patients is a woman named Mrs. DeGenaro, who shows a clear distaste for Misty. Although she doesn't speak, she is defiant with her, refusing to eat and knocking the food off her tray onto the floor. Misty retaliates by saying her stomach must be upset by her pain medication and they should skip a dose. As she slips the pills into her pocket, she leans in and tells her patient, "Don't fuck with me." She seems to have maintained some of the same eagerness to be liked, cheerfully greeting her coworkers who mostly ignore her.

While on a date, she rambles awkwardly and pressures the man into continuing on with their outing when he clearly wants to leave as soon as possible. Claiming that her car wouldn't start, she coerces him into driving her home then guilts him into coming inside with her when he doesn't want to, saying that if he thought she was pretty, he would come inside.

Walking into her living room, she is confronted by former teammate Natalie aiming a rifle at her and greeting her by saying, "Hello, Misty, you crazy fucking bitch." Misty's date leaves immediately.

Misty does not seem surprised or concerned but instead possibly excited. She asks if she is there about the postcard, which Natalie confirms. Natalie believed Misty was behind a strange postcard she received - one with the message "Wish you were here" over the image of mountains and on the back a strange symbol that they all saw in the wilderness. Misty insists she did not send the cards and that she received one herself. She then explains that she's a member of the online "citizen detective" community and she has dug up a number of interesting clues.

Road trip[]

Misty and Natalie Jailed

They go to a local bar to talk more and Misty shows Natalie a large folder containing information about a number of people who were involved in the plane crash, including an ID showing the new identity of Travis Martinez, the son of head coach Bill Martinez who had been stranded in the wilderness with them and had a romantic relationship with Natalie. They are approached by an old friend of Natalie's, Kevyn, who recognizes her. He tells them he is a detective in the area now and would love to catch up with her, leaving his card which Misty swipes and puts in her pocket.

The following morning, Misty pulls into the parking lot of Natalie's motel as she gets in her car, saying she had spotted her from across the street and came over. When Natalie's car doesn't start, Misty offers to take her wherever she had planned to go and Natalie tells her she was going to find Travis. They agree to make the over three hour trip together in Misty's car but Natalie insists on driving.

While traveling, Natalie stops at a gas station to fuel up and get snacks. She sends Misty inside to get the snacks and while she does so, confirms what she suspected: that Misty stole her car's battery cables so that the two of them would be forced to travel together and hid them in her glove box. When they arrive at the shack where Travis is now living, no one is there. Misty suggests that they go into town and gather information, but Natalie instead busts in the door's window.

There, Misty discovers that Travis is working for minimum wage at a place called Willow Brook Ranch. Before they can learn much more, however, they are arrested by a cop who discovered the break-in. Misty calls Kevyn Tan, who she had been texting since the night before pretending to be Natalie, and gets them bailed out. Natalie then decides that they will visit Willow Brook Ranch, but not before confronting Misty about her sabotage. Misty admits that she wanted to come with Natalie to investigate, but didn't think that she would say yes if she asked.

Investigations[]

Yellowjackets 105 1017 R

Misty and Natalie threatening Misty's citizen detective contact, Stallion99

They head to Willow Brook Branch. There, Misty discovers Travis hanging from the rafters of a barn. She tries to stop Natalie from looking, but it is too late. Seeing this, Natalie collapses on the ground, sobbing. Misty rushes her back to the car, warning her they need to get out of there, as the cops are coming. Back on the road, Misty shows Natalie a paper that she discovered back at the shack, which reads, "Tell Nat she was right." Misty asks Natalie if she knows what she was right about. Natalie says that she doesn't, but she does know one thing for sure, that Travis didn't kill himself. Somebody did this to him.

Later, Misty follows Natalie, who hasn't answered her calls, to a restaurant where she is meeting with Kevyn and watches her through the window from the patio. She notices that Jessica, the supposed reporter who has been hounding the survivors for their stories, is also there watching Natalie from the bar. She tries to call Natalie and when she doesn't answer, she texts her to let her know. To her surprise, Natalie is angry that she is also spying on her and not appreciative of Misty giving her the tip. Natalie tells her to leave her alone and that she doesn't need her help.

Once Natalie leaves, Misty approaches Jessica at the bar, telling her she may not look at her and see someone she should be afraid of, but she's wrong. Then she goes on to call Shauna and inform her that Travis is dead. When Natalie finally calls her asking her to use her connection to get into Kevyn's email for the file on Travis's death, Misty hopes for an apology she doesn't get, but agrees to see what she can do. She goes to visit her at the motel, giving her a gift that contains a secret camera which will allow Misty to watch her. She says that her contact, Stallion99, got the file but was being difficult due to the fact it was a police file and wanted to meet them in person. Natalie has Misty carry a thermos containing gasoline with them to meet him at a restaurant. When he doesn't cooperate, she nods to Misty who pours the gas on his crotch. Natalie threatens to light him on fire if he doesn't give them the file, which he does and leaves right away.

Kidnapper[]

Yellowjackets 107 1908 R

Misty with a kidnapped Jessica Roberts

Determined to get to the bottom of the blackmail case, but once again being shut out by Natalie, Misty arranges a meeting with Jessica Roberts. She acts as though she wants to talk with Jessica and reveal something to her, but when Jessica enters her car, she injects her with a needle filled with something that causes her to pass out almost instantly. When Jessica next awakes, she finds herself bound and gagged inside Misty's basement. When she starts shouting, Misty watches from the top of a stairwell. She tells her "Good night, sleep tight, don't let the fact that you're a terrible person keep you at night" before closing the door and walking away.

Misty holds Jessica hostage, assuming she has a part in sending the postcards, blackmailing them, and killing Travis. She presses her for information, resorting to injecting chocolates with fentanyl she threatens to send to Jessica's elderly father. Jessica admits that she had been hired by Taissa to see if any of the survivors would talk, and that she had spoken with Travis prior to his death but was not responsible for it- indicating that whoever had drained his bank account after he died was the likely culprit.

Misty notices on the hidden camera in Natalie's room that she is purchasing drugs and hurries over, bursting through the door as Natalie lines the substance out onto a plate. Misty impulsively snorts most of it herself, pushing the rest onto the floor. Luckily, it turns out to be cocaine- which Misty says she has never done- rather than something that would have killed her.

Cover-up[]

Yellowjackets 110 1689 R

Misty, dressed up for a cover-up

Later, Misty is manipulated by Jessica. Jessica tells her that the other girls have been in contact with each other for the past 25 years, but they haven't kept in touch with her. Pushed by Jessica, she seems to consider the idea of telling her story, having bonded with Jessica and clearly impressed with her powers of storytelling. Then, however, Nat arrives at her door, apologizing for the way she has treated her. She asks for her help because she is "good at things", specifically, disposing of a dead body. Misty seems most pleased by the idea.

Misty swings by the nursing home where she works, picking up supplies to aid in the disposal of the body on the pretense of picking up a Tupperware container. While there, she learns that the elderly patient whose pain medication she withheld, Gloria DeGenaro, has died of a stroke. She the proceeds with Natalie to the flat of Adam Martin, the dead guy whose body they are disposing of. Shauna had killed Adam, believing him to be the one blackmailing the surviving Yellowjackets, a pretense she maintains to cover up the fact that her husband Jeff was actually the blackmailer. Misty has them all get to work, having Shauna and Natalie hack up the body while she and Taissa go on cleaning duty. Afterwards, she disposes of Adam's head and hands by attending DeGenaro's funeral and secretly inserting a bag containing them into the coffin of DeGenaro's body, which is cremated.

Misty returns home, where she floats to Jessica Roberts the possibility of letting her go. She asks how she can be sure that Roberts won't turn her in. Jessica explains that she is a fixer for the rich and powerful and has seen a lot of powerful stuff. She says that her captivity isn't enough to make her rethink their deal. Misty releases her and discusses future plans, including the idea of somebody playing in a movie. She tells her not to worry about it just yet, that she'll make some calls first. Misty tells her that her car is parked out front and gives her back her bag. Jessica, however, discovers that her cigarettes are missing. She pleads with Misty to give them back and Misty fishes them out of the trash, but warns her that they're an awful habit. Jessica lights up and drives off. As she does so, her vision begins to go blurry and she eventually loses control of the car and crashes. As she passes out, she realizes "Fucking bitch," as a flashback shows Misty injecting something into her cigarettes.

New investigations[]

Misty tries to coach Shauna for a possible interrogation by the police. Using a voice distorter, she poses questions to her such as "Why did you kill Adam Martin?" and "How was the sex?" Shauna fails the session miserably, issuing weak, panicky denials when, as Misty explains, the only thing she should say is "I want my lawyer." To emphasize this, Misty points out that she even wrote the phrase in icing on a cookie sitting in front of Shauna. Shauna, feeling that none of this is helping, tells Misty that she's going to go. Misty tells her that she can't, that Taissa and Natalie aren't even there late. Shauna, however, tells her that they're an hour late, which is perfectly on time for people who aren't coming. "But I made punch," whines Misty, telling Natalie that she can feel that there was something that they missed.

Misty decides to log in to the citizen detective website in order to see if there is any chatter about Adam Martin's death. Most of it is just the usual stupid speculation. She, however, is deeply disturbed by the posting of somebody using the handle PuttingtheSickinForensics who asks "What about the girlfriend?" who states that he reviewed his last credit card statement and discovered purchases such as mini-golf and lingerie and that they all know where this is going, that "it's always the husband, unless it's the mystery lady friend." "No!" shouts Misty, but then comments to herself that the guy is grasping at straws.

Misty next pays a visit to the hotel where Natalie was living. She goes to the desk of the manager, Larry, asking him what happened to the woman who was staying in Room 135. He tells her that he'll check his records, but he just sits there. She points out that he's not doing anything, giving a description of Natalie and saying that there's no way she would have left town without telling her, so something must have happened to her. Larry comments that something happens to everyone and she says that this is true and that it can be worse depending on people's choices.

Misty recites Larry's address and Social Security Number. He tells her that he'll level with her, that the one thing they have at the hotel is discretion. He asks if she's ever stayed there before, then says that it doesn't matter, that even if she has, she hasn't, that anyone who wants to know anything had better have a warrant. She tells him that she has a full bladder and two days off and is willing to wait, sitting herself down. Larry then groans, telling Misty that Natalie took off, leaving cash and splitting in the middle of the night. Misty goes to Natalie's room and sits on her bed, crying, then telling herself not to cry. She then notices the signs of forced entry on the door and pulls herself together. As she goes to examine it, she notices a security camera outside as well.

The note[]

Misty posts a picture of the security camera on a citizen detective board, asking for advice. Most of the responses are unhelpful or downright trolling, but there is one in particular that catches her eye. It is by "PuttingtheSickinForensics" and states that he might have an idea, if she stops downvoting his Adam Martin theories. In response, she tells him that she will stop doing this when he stops wasting their time with wild goose chases.

Later, Misty is working at the nursing home when a man enters with a woman in a wheelchair and starts speaking with one of the other nurses, claiming to be looking for a place for his mother. Something about him seems off and while walking past her, he gives her a significant look. She visits the break room and discovers a Tupperware container with an envelope addressed to her.

Inside the envelope is a seemingly blank piece of paper. However, after bringing it home, she gets a brainwave. Placing it under a UV light, she discovers a note from the man, who confirms himself to be the poster from the boards. He tells her that the camera is only a dummy, designed to deter intruders. He continues, however, that he IDed a man who's been living in the motel for three months, inviting her to join him for an interrogation of the man, who believes he's under investigation by the FBI.

The purple people[]

Misty meets the man at the dock. He addresses her by name, saying that it's an honor to meet her. She addresses him by his name, Walter Tattersall, revealing that she did her research. She is horrified, however, when he indicates the "suspect," and she recognizes him as Randy Walsh, whom she's known since elementary school. She warns Walter that their cover will be blown if he sees her and so the two come to a hasty arrangement: she hides and speaks with him over the phone, feeding questions to him through earbuds.

The two get to work, but at first Randy does not seem to have any useful information that would help Misty find Natalie. Although he has been living at same motel as Natalie for three months, he seems to know nothing that would help regarding her disappearance. At her urging, Walter goes the "bad cop" route, smacking Randy in the face and threatening him with further violence. Eventually, Randy reveals that he had repeatedly seen a group of several people dressed in all purple hanging around the motel. He criticizes them for buying out all of the Fanta from the soda machine. Misty realizes that if they used a credit card then Walter may be able to track them. He does so, finding the origins of the credit card, and suggests that they go on a road trip.

Misty happily agrees to Walter's road trip idea. However, as they are traveling, Walter pulls out a box of cassette tapes of music from musicals, asking her what her preference is. Seeing this, Misty becomes angry and turns on him, accusing him of just being a Yellowjackets obsessive who wants to try to find out from her what happened in the wilderness. He, however, tells her that this is not the case, that he wanted to work with her as a citizen detective, as he told her. He says that he doesn't care about her being a Yellowjacket, that it was 30 years ago. "25," protests Misty, asking if it's really true that he just happens to love musicals. She claims not to really care about musicals herself and he asks if she'd be alright with Starlight Express. "Oh, let's tell the story of Cinderella, except every character's a train?" protests Misty, putting on an Evita cassette instead.

Parting ways[]

The two continue their search, eventually coming upon a cafe where they discover a waitress who gives them a tip that those with the cult sell honey at a nearby farmer's market. From there, they are able to confirm the cult's approximate location. Misty wants to go right away, but Walter suggests that get rooms at a local B&B and surprise them in the morning. He also reveals to Misty that he is a multimillionaire, having settled with a construction company for $6 million dollars after a torrent of bricks hit hit on the head, forcing him to have a metal plate installed.

The next morning, as the two close in on the cult, Walter suggests playing a game of "two truths and a lie" in order to get to know each other better. Misty tries to ignore him, claiming a need for concentration, but he starts up anyway, saying that he once owned a small business selling artisanal goat cheese with a goat named "Billy," that there's a non-zero chance that Barry Manilow is his father and that he has $175,000 of stock in Taco Bell despite never having been to one. She makes a couple of guesses and he tells her that they're all true. She says that he doesn't understand the rules of his own game, but he tells her that she now knows three more things about him. He presses her to reveal three things about herself and she sighs, saying that she does not like monkeys and that she thinks that they're asking the wrong questions about the moon landing.

Before Misty can reveal anything else, she shouts, telling Walter to turn the car around. They pull up before a gate labeled "Camp Green Pine" with a picture of a bee on it and Misty tells Walter that she thinks they've found them. They manage to get somebody to bring Natalie to see them. Natalie, however, is not pleased to see Misty. She refutes Misty's claim of being held there against her will, saying that while it is true that she was kidnapped at first, she's fine now and that Lottie is helping her to reflect. Misty is confused, asking Natalie, "The Lottie who was committed to a mental institution in Switzerland?" Natalie tells her that she doesn't need her help and to take her "Hardy Boy" and go home, that she doesn't need her getting in the way.

Misty is stunned by this turn of events. She tells Walter that Natalie must only be acting, that it's "Cult 101" to cut you off from your friends. She suggests that Lottie is just jealous of what they have, that you can't buy that kind of friendship, but you could... "Murder for it?" suggests Walter. He comments that Misty's friendships are a little more complicated than most. "Adam Martin," he says, telling her that he researched her story and that she slipped up, that Adam Martin's mother is dead. He tells her that he thought about it and concluded that she most likely murdered Adam Martin to help out a friend. He tells her that it's okay, that he likes her regardless of her extracurricular activities, but she tells him that he needs to go. When he points that he's her ride, she tells him that she'll figure it out, but whatever it is between them is over. After he is gone, she bangs on the gate till somebody comes, telling them that she wants to join.

Infiltration[]

Misty is admitted into the community. Checking in, she is forced to turn in all of her personal possessions. She tries to avoid turning in her phone, but is given away by pings of two texts sent by Walter. She asks what she would do in an emergency, but the acolyte tells her that they have a landline in the kitchen. He tells her that he's been where she is, but that phones keep us captive to other people's priorities.

Just then, Lottie appears and dismisses the acolyte. She seems troubled to see Misty and Misty comments on this, saying that she thought she'd be happier to see her. Lottie asks what she's doing there and Misty replies that she's there to retrieve Natalie from a kidnapping that's looking more like a brainwashing, so the real question is what she is doing there. Lottie argues that they saved Natalie from killing herself, but Misty tells her that she doesn't believe it, that the two of them aren't even friends. Lottie asks her if she can stay, saying it would be good both for Natalie and for her.

Despite her reservations, Misty chooses to remain. She takes part in a drum circle in which the acolytes let out their deepest feelings of loss. The man who inducted her asks her if she'd like a turn, saying that just about everyone who ends up there has been dumped in some way or another. Misty, however, claims that she's never been through a breakup, admitting that she's only there going through the motions until she can talk to Natalie. At this, the man seems very interested in the fact that she knows Natalie and she says that if everyone is done crying, she can tell them some stories.

Misty later manages to sneak use of the phone in the kitchen. She contacts Taissa Turner, who tells her that she doesn't have time for her. She tells her that she won't believe where she is, that she's in a residential wellness center off Route 19 in Cherry Hill, New York. When Taissa asks if she's there getting help, Misty tells her that everyone there is getting help from Lottie. She continues that Natalie is there too and she needs to see the place for herself, commenting that it's full of "granola losers" but that the BO factor is surprisingly low.

Following this, Misty joins some of the acolytes, including the guy who checked her in, for lunch at the compound's cafeteria. It is here that she finally reunites with Natalie, the others making themselves scarce as Natalie approaches. Natalie asks her why she came back and she replies that she didn't seem like herself when she spoke to her the day before and she wanted to find out what exactly was going on. She tells her that she still seems a little weird and that so does Lottie. She tells her that she gets why she's into the place, that knowing Lottie makes them celebrities there and that it seems like everyone there is happy. Natalie asks her what happened to the guy she was with. Misty tells her that he went home. "We're all like this, aren't we?" comments Natalie, darkly. Later, Shauna, Taissa and Van all arrive at the compound. Seeing Taissa and Van, Misty asks if they're together again. Taissa denies it, saying that Van is only dropping her off, but Van seems stunned at the sight of Lottie.

The magic[]

Lottie tells the newly arrived Yellowjackets, including Misty, that when people first arrive at the compound, she often lets them choose a therapy from a list with a name but not any description, just something that speaks to them. She presents a chart with four different therapies - Forage, Guidance, Renewal and Self-Care. Misty ends up with Self-Care by default, which Lottie declares to be her own personal favorite therapy. She is led by Lisa, one of Lottie's acolytes, to a sensory deprivation tank, and told that her treatment is simply to climb in, with bathing suits provided for those who object to nudity. Misty, clearly disturbed, objects to the tank as being a "water-coffin." She suggests that the treatment isn't necessarily, saying that she's been at there at the compound for a while and gotten tuned in, but Lisa points out that she's only been there less than a day and has yet to engage in any actual therapies. Misty then asks to use the restroom first and Lisa agrees to this, but she uses it as a way to sneak outside.

Outside, Misty encounters Shauna sitting by a tree stump. She asks if she's okay and Shauna asks if she shouldn't be in therapy. "Shouldn't you?" asks Shauna, turning the question on her, and explaining that hers is to care for a baby goat and that it's tied up nearby. She turns to find the goat gone, having chewed through the rope, and swears. Misty pulls some food from her pocket to lure the goat, telling Shauna that she's been hoarding just in case they decide to enforce calorie restrictions, that her blood sugar couldn't handle that. As they call out for the goat, Shauna expresses her fear that she's going to be made to kill it at the end of the experience. Misty asks her why this would be a problem, pointing out her killing of Adam Martin. Shauna gets angry at her for joking about this, telling her that she doesn't think of killing as a joke. Misty, however, complains that she's the only one who took Shauna's killing of Adam Martin seriously, and she's never been grateful for it. Shauna replies that she's grateful that Misty's hobby is figuring out to be the perfect serial killer and Misty asks why everyone keeps saying this to her, pointing out that Shauna is hardly innocent herself. They find Shauna's goat and an acolyte comes to Misty, telling her that Lisa is looking for her.

Back at the tank, Lisa tells Misty to please get in. Misty protests, asking about needing to unlock it. Lisa tells her, however, that there is no lock, that it's super-safe and that nobody cares about her being inside. Giving in, Misty finally gets in the tank. She has a strange vision in which she imagines Walter and a human version of her bird Caligula putting on a song and dance performance, a showtune in which Caligula basically tells her to just steamroll over anyone who might get in her way. Afterwards, she meets him backstage as he's removing his costume. He asks her what's going on and she asks him if people just look at her and see someone desperate for love, just some murderer. He, however, tells her to take it from him to look for the magic - that she's not a murderer, but rather a "closer." She then gets a phone call from Walter in which he tells her by Morse code that he loves her. She emerges from the tank and goes to the compound's phone, using it to call Walter. She gets his voicemail and tells him that he was right about the "thing," that as a woman it can be hard for her to take a leap of trust with someone but that she never should have pushed him away.

Misty later joins the group, who has gathered at Natalie's request in the hope that they will share what they learned from the day. When she asks who wants to get started, however, Shauna holds up a bottle of booze, saying that she already has. Although Natalie is annoyed at first, Lottie joins the group and ends up providing some choice beverages of her own. The group is soon sitting and talking freely. Natalie asks Misty what the deal is with Walter and Misty says that they met online and are still defining the relationship but that "when you know, you know." "Does he know?" quips Van. As the conversation continues, Misty starts to ask about if they all remember something that happened the first summer that they were in the wilderness, but Van cuts her off, asking if she really wants to talk about this. The group soon starts dancing joyfully to the song "Lightning Crashes," but the merry-making is cut short when Shauna receives an urgent phone call.

Taking care of things[]

The phone call turns out to have been from Shauna's husband, Jeff, reporting to her that the police have found the body of Adam Martin at a local park. As Shauna starts to make her leave from Camp Green Pine, Misty pesters Natalie, asking her if she measured the grave to a standard six feet. Natalie replies that she didn't have a tape measure and Misty says that she should have just done it herself. Before Shauna can leave, Van tosses away her keys into the wilderness, demanding that everyone explain what is going on. They question the fact that it was Jeff who told her about Adam, given that he wasn't supposed to know anything about it and Shauna admits to having told them. This annoys Misty further, her complaining that she was very specific about their instructions.

A crowd of acolytes having gathered, Lottie relocates the group to the Sharing Shack to discuss matters further. The conversation turns to why Van is even present there at all and Van explains about Taissa having hitchhiked to her place. Misty comments that Taissa could have just asked her for Van's address, that she's had it for years, instead of "outsourcing." When Natalie asks what she means by this, Misty asks Taissa if she wants to tell. When, however, Taissa remains silent, Misty reveals that it was Taissa who hired Jessica Roberts to look into all of them. Shauna is shocked, asking what might have happened if Jessica went rogue, but Misty tells her that she took care of it. "You're welcome," she comments, asking if she was really just supposed to let Jessica Roberts go after having kept her in her basement for a week. She continues that she only kidnapped her in the first place because she had believed her to the blackmailer. Shauna asks how she's the only bad guy in the whole situation when Misty has been kidnapped people and the FBI has been going around investigating Natalie. At this, Misty reveals that she was actually the "FBI" as well, along with Walter.

As Misty continues her train of thought, she notes that Randy was acting oddly scared for an innocent man. She notes him having mentioned Jeff and Shauna tries to claim it being because the two of them are best friends, but Misty says it was like they had done something he was nervous about. She continues that she didn't realize it at the time, but there was somebody else who had access to Shauna's journals. Catching on, Natalie asks Shauna if it was Jeff who sent the postcards, if he was the one blackmailing them. Taissa complains that Shauna lied to them all and Shauna says that she didn't know what to do, that she was afraid if they knew the truth, they might try to kill Jeff. She then, however, admits that she likely would have done the same had somebody close to one of them been the blackmailer. Natalie thanks her for honesty, saying that they're all messed up and it's time they talked about. Lottie, however, states that it isn't something that can be solved by talking or therapies, that something greater guided them there and they have to give it what it wants.

The plan[]

Lottie's idea of "giving it what it wants" turns out be one of them. Specifically, her idea is for each of them to each drink from a cup of tea, one of which is poisoned with phenobarbital, which they use at the compound to euthanize animals that are suffering. She describes it as being quick and painless, but Misty points out that it is also what was used by those in the infamous Heaven's Gate cult. She comments that it's convenient that Lottie knows which cup is poisoned and Lottie replies that they're free to shuffle them around as much as they want. She says that this is how it helped them to survive back in the wilderness and it can help them now.

Shauna, however, states that if they're going to do this, they need to do it the way they did before: using masks, a deck of playing cards and having a hunt. The others are confused at first, but as Lottie hugs her, she gives them all significant looks intended to convey that she is clearly just trying to buy them time and that they need to play along. After Lottie leaves to go start preparing things, Misty comments that they could easily get Lottie committed again and that as a nurse, she could get in touch with Lottie's attending physician. Natalie, however, says that they can't just hospitalize Lottie and call it a day, and Van agrees, saying that this isn't just about Lottie, but what happened to all of them. Misty raids a cabinet in Lottie's office, finding medication labeled with the name Dr. Brandt. She also reclaims her phone and is disappointed to see no messages, but just then, it starts buzzing. Walter appears at the door and tells her that he's there to help.

Despair[]

The group gathers in the woods of the compounds, ready to begin their strange ritual. As Lottie holds up the Queen of Hearts card and shows it to the others, Misty asks if everyone else from the community is in their beds and Lottie tells her that she made sure of it. They draw cards and continue drawing until finally Shauna holds up the Queen of Hearts. At this, the others don their masks and Lottie tells her that she can submit or run. Shauna protests, asking if they are really doing this, but when it becomes clear that they are, she runs. As they chase her, Lottie's shoulder is grazed by a bullet, fired by Shauna's daughter, Callie. Shauna pleads with Callie to put down the gun and asks the others where the psych team is. Taissa tells her that they're not coming. "What?!" Misty asks, clearly not having been informed of this, and Taissa explains that it was Van's idea. Van says that this isn't right, that Lottie is like this because of them, and Lottie asks them what they all hear.

Lottie asks the others if she believes them now that was with them in the woods is still there even now. She points out the various things that they have all done, including Misty keeping Jessica Roberts in her basement and eventually killing her. She tells Natalie that it was in her even when she denied it, that she was always its favorite. Hearing this, something seems to snap in Natalie and she shouts, asking why she can't just stop. Just then, Lisa shows up, brandishing a shotgun. She asks Natalie what she did, if she killed people. Natalie waves her knife at her, telling her that she had told her to leave. Lisa shouts at her to drop the knife and she does. Lisa presses forward and Misty draws a syringe, ready to use it on her. As Lisa charges at Natalie, however, Natalie throws herself forward, causing Misty to accidentally inject her with the contents of the syringe instead.

"No, no," pleads Misty. As Natalie collapses in her arms, Van shouts, asking what she did. Taissa shouts to call an ambulance and Shauna points out that they don't have their phones. Taissa asks what they do and Misty sobs, saying that there's nothing, that they're too late. As Natalie draws her last breath, Misty tells her that she's sorry. She later watches in shock as Natalie's body is loaded on a stretcher to be taken away. Walter comes to her, telling her that he's taken care of the Adam Martin situation, but she just sobs in his arms, telling him that she killed her best friend. He hugs her. As Lottie is taken away, she tells the others that that they gave "it" what it wanted and that it's pleased with them.

Christina Ricci Answers All Of Our Misty Quigley Questions - Yellowjackets - Paramount+

Christina Ricci, who plays Misty as an adult, spoke regarding the series and her character in an interview with Matt Weiss of CBS. She described her character as somebody who has her own set of rules and is very extreme, but is nevertheless grounded and with a trackable kind of journey. She worked with Sammi Hanratty, who played the character as a teen, to establish ground rules. She stated that she likes the idea that the show's characters aren't good or likeable people. Asked to sum up the show in three words, she described it as "tense, fun and scary."[1] For the casting process for teen Misty, the show's creators wrote a scene which didn't appear in the final series. In it, Misty faced off against a teacher who accused her of cheating. She got her way, but then quietly flipped the teacher off and cussed her out. Upon Sammi Hanratty reading the scene, they knew immediately that she had the role. Hanratty auditioned for Yellowjackets five times and actually initially auditioned for the character of Natalie.[2]

In an interview with Collider following the second season finale, Christina Ricci described Misty's state of mind during the card game and subsequent events at Camp Green Pine. She had truly believed that the medical professionals would come to take Lottie away before anything bad could happen and it wasn't until Taissa and Van stated that they called them off that they she realized that nobody was coming to help them. Once she realized this, she truly believed that somebody was going to die, having the memory of "the wilderness chooses" and that until then, she had just been trying to do what Shauna was doing.[3]

Following the 2nd season finale where it was revealed that it was in fact Natalie that became the Antler Queen, Ricci revealed that Misty's devotion and desperate attempts to save Natalie was because Natalie had been HER Queen and that she would not do what she did for Natalie for any of the other Yellowjackets. If Natalie's safety had been assured when Lisa threatened the group she would not have intervened and let the others die.
