Kristen, more commonly known as "Crystal," is a character on the Showtime original series Yellowjackets. She is portrayed by Nuha Jes Izman.
History[]
Crystal is one of the WHS Yellowjackets survivors of the crash of Flight 2525. Her real name is Kristen, but most refer to her as "Crystal" because one of her fellow Yellowjackets referred to her as "Crystal the Pistol" on the first day of practice. The name stuck, and she decided not to correct it, as she was flattered, never having had a nickname before. When still in her mother's womb, Crystal absorbed her identical twin. She does not feel guilty about it and sometimes imagines that she is channeling her while performing on stage. She annoys the other survivors in the wilderness with her humming and singing. She irritates Misty Quigley with her performance of "The Glory of Love" and apologizes, telling her that she had to go and it helps "grease the skids." She tells her that she knows it's annoying to people who aren't in the theater and that she tells herself to stop, but that Misty should try it sometime. When Misty protests that she can't sing, she offers to be her vocal coach. Misty seems dismissive of the idea at first, but when Crystal tells her she could harmonize, she seems interested.
Following this, Misty and Crystal grow a friendship. They begin hanging out together, and Crystal tutors Misty in the art of performance. When the Yellowjackets hold a baby shower for Shauna's then-unborn baby, Crystal talks Misty into performing a monologue from Steel Magnolias as her baby shower gift and leads a round of applause afterward. The two share secrets with each other and even share chores.
One day while the two of them are out emptying the poop bucket, they share some of their deepest secrets with each other. Crystal admits to Misty her real name. Misty then tells her that she has something to tell her but makes her pinky swear not to reveal it to anyone else. She then reveals her darkest secret: she discovered the plane's emergency transmitter and destroyed it.
Crystal's demeanor immediately changes - she is horrified to discover that somebody whom she's considered her best friend is responsible for them being stranded. Seeing Crystal's reaction, Misty tries to pretend it was just a joke. Crystal, however, tells her that she knows that it isn't, that she isn't that good an actress. Misty tells her that she can't tell anyone, saying that she'll do whatever she wants. Crystal asks what she'll do if she does, if she'll poison her. "I'll.. fucking... kill you," Misty tells her. In her horror, Crystal accidentally backs off the precipice they're standing on and falls to her death.
Shocked, Misty makes her way to the body, sobbing, "No, no, no." She applies chest compressions, but it is no good. Crystal is bleeding from the mouth and clearly dead. She cries that she's sorry as a snowstorm intensifies around her. She returns to the cabin, lying that she "lost" Crystal and that the two of them got separated in the storm.
Later, after the snowstorm dies down, Misty overhears Mari chatting with some of the other girls, saying that she thinks that Misty might even be even more psychotic than they thought and might have done something to Crystal. When they ask why Misty would kill her only friend, Mari points out that Misty had tried to kill Coach Scott and asks why Misty isn't out searching for Crystal. That the wilderness wouldn't want them to waste it.
Misty joins the group that goes searching for Crystal, but fakes a breakdown at the idea of how she might react upon seeing Crystal's lifeless body. Akilah suggests that she head back, while the others continue searching. Misty agrees, but once free of the group, she returns to the site where Crystal fell, hoping to find the body and prevent the others from cannibalizing it. She, however, is unable to find the body.
She’s mentioned in season 3 by Misty, who seems to regret her involvement in her tragic death.
Behind the scenes[]
Crystal is a new character in the second season of Yellowjackets. She appears in the wilderness with the crash survivors of Flight 2525. As she was never mentioned by name in the first season of Yellowjackets, it is possible that she may have been one of the background survivors portrayed by another actress.
Trivia[]
- Crystal was Misty's only known true friend out in the wilderness.
- She was one of two people who knows about the black box (the other being Natalie).
- It has not yet been revealed what happened to Crystal's body. Several theories have been put forward:
- It was scavenged by wolves.
- It was moved by the snowdrift, meaning Misty couldn't find it.
- It was moved by another of the Yellowjackets, perhaps Taissa Turner in a fugue state. They may be hoarding the corpse and leaving it in the snow to eat later.
- It disappeared by supernatural means.
- Crystal survived the fall somehow, and Misty incorrectly thought she was dead.
- The body was taken by someone else than Yellowjackets, someone who we don't know yet.
- Misty simply misjudged the position in the snow, and thus was unable to find the body.
- Due to her complete absence from the first season of the program, it became a popular theory with some fans that Crystal was a merely a hallucination of Misty's. This, however, is negated by the fact that she is clearly shown interacting with several other characters, that Misty discusses her with the other characters, and she is mentioned by other characters in the third season of Yellowjackets.
